RING THE BELL FOR GENDER EQUALITY 2020

OVERVIEW

In celebration of International Women’s Day (IWD) on 8 March 2020, the Uganda Securities Exchange together with over 90 stock exchanges around the world will join the International Finance Corporation, Sustainable Stock Exchanges initiative, United Nations Global Compact, UN Women, World Federation of Exchanges, and Women in ETFs in ringing their market opening or closing bells to draw attention to the critical role that business and markets can and must play in tackling gender inequalities.

THEME OF 2020 RING THE BELL FOR GENDER EQUALITY 

The theme of International Women’s Day 2020 is “I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights”. The theme is aligned with UN Women’s new multigenerational global flagship campaign, Generation Equality, which marks the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action adopted by consensus in 1995. A visionary agenda for women’s rights and empowerment, the campaign details ways to remove the systematic barriers that hold women back from equal participation in all areas of public and private life. Despite some progress, real change has been agonizingly slow for the majority of women and girls in the world. Today, not a single country can claim to have achieved gender equality. Multiple obstacles remain, with too little change in law, practice and culture.
Through the Generation Equality campaign, UN Women brings together the old and new generations of gender equality advocates, visionaries, and change makers to tackle the unfinished business of empowering women. For the private sector, the WEPs serve as the framework to implement this agenda.

OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the 2020 Ring the Bell for Gender Equality initiative are to:

  1. Highlight the business case for advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment in the workplace, marketplace, and community.
  2. Encourage adoption and implementation of the WEPs – a joint initiative of UN Women and the UN Global Compact – the primary vehicle for corporate delivery on gender equality dimensions of the 2030 agenda and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG5 on gender equality and the empowerment of women.
  3. Draw attention to the importance of building a pipeline of women’s leadership talent.
  4. Promote gender diversity and women’s full and effective leadership in all aspects of society, along with the multiplier effect of investing in womenand girls on families, communities, economies, and business.
  5. Align the theme of bell ringing events with this year’s Generation Equality campaign explained below.
  6. Obtain tangible commitments from stock exchanges and issuers to advance gender equality and promote increased female representation in boardrooms and growing the pipeline of female talent to ascend to top positions in their markets.
  7. Engage local partners, including the media.
